the essentials

This year I made a resolution to get back to basics with my wardrobe. To invest in quality, classic pieces that can be dressed up or down etc. However, putting this into action has been a whole different story. Mostly because I'm so easily distracted every time I go clothes shopping. Shiny silver jumper? Leopard print pants? I'm there! So today I compiled this shopping list of sorts. It's all the stuff I should consider buying before I purchase another Gorman printed top or eye-poppingly bright knitwear.

MOTO Fitted Denim Jacket - There was a time where I wouldn't go near denim jackets. But now I can't get enough of them. A fitted, light denim style would slot nicely into my wardrobe. It breaks up the monotony of black but can still be counted as a neutral. Plus it'd also look good with bright or pastel colours which, let's face it, makes up the majority of my wardrobe.

Hope 'Has' Tee at La Garçonne - My trusty striped t-shirt is on death's door so I'm looking for a replacement. Just like finding the perfect white t-shirt, the perfect striped t-shirt is proving to be elusive. Most of the ones I come across are either the wrong cut, colour, or fabric. Yes, I'm a pedant. I'd ultimately like to find one under the $100 mark but I feel as if my hand is going to be forced on this one.

Ray-Ban Clubmasters at Vision Direct - I left my old clubmasters on the Eurostar in Paris two years ago. I've been mourning their loss ever since. It's probably about time I bought a replacement pair.

Topshop Cigarette TrousersI hate pants shopping. But I need to bite the bullet and find a pair of (flattering) cigarette-style trousers so I can pretend I'm all gamine and Audrey Hepburn-like.

ASOS 'Abacus' Leather Ankle BootsShort, flat ankle boots for winter. To wear with everything. They're a no brainer, really.

ASOS Rib Boyfriend Beanie - In case it ever actually gets cold in Brisbane this winter.

What do your wardrobe essentials look like?

  1. these all make sense, you need a bit of denim, stripes and basics in there. i'd say indigo jeans, white t shirt, blue shirt and brown shoes

  2. Totally hear you re: getting back to basics. I'm having the same kind of epiphany at the moment..!

Love this post, the basic denim jacket, the stripe tee, neutral beanie... loving it all.

  3. I feel exactly how you feel! When it comes to classic, basic pieces I always hem and haw, but when it's a poofy dress that I don't even have anywhere to wear it, I buy it in an instant!

That said, I love your choices here! <3

    1. As long as you have a few basics you'll always have something to team with your more outrageous purchases ;)

  4. My wardrobe essentials look... uh... exactly like this. I just finished packing my bag for a drive to Sydney tomorrow. Identical striped shirt, black leggings, a long chambray over shirt and black flats. Yes, I know 'leggings aren't pants' but I'm driving so they pass. Only the people at mcdonald will see me haha.

    1. I'm okay with leggings as pants these days as long as the top covers the crotch area. My main fight these days is with see-through tights/stockings as pants haha.

  6. Mine are pretty much the same although in place of black cigarette trousers would be leather leggings. I'm still on the hunt for a denim jacket, after realising how truly versatile they are, and of course you can never have too many striped tees. Have you tried looking at J Crew? I was on their site earlier and there seemed to be a few striped pieces..

    1. I actually look at J Crew the other day. There's a red striped one that's pretty cute, just unsure of the cut - it looks fairly fitted whereas I'm after a looser style. I had my heart set on a T by Alexander Wang one but when I saw it in store I wasn't too keen on the fabric haha. I'm bound to find one eventually!

  7. I totally adore all of this and would still wear it for our north american spring weather. Versatility FTW!

  8. this! especially the pants! I feel buying a pair of trouser pants will finally mean I'm a grown up haha. for my list I would add on a trench coat or a bomber jacket or maybe even a leather jacket for the weather, and a nice fitted dress.
